Logbook, kept by Henry B. Chase, comprised of four whaling voyages. First voyage documents the Lucretia (Steam bark) of New Bedford, mastered by Thomas Mellen, from 15 December 1881 - 21 November 1882 to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Includes descriptions of whales seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, illnesses, and punishments. Also contains whale stamps and a crew list. The voyage returned to San Francisco in November 1882. This voyage originally sailed from New Bedford in October 1881, but the vessel was disabled in a hurricane and forced to return to New Bedford for repairs only to sail again on December 15, 1881. The vessel tried for three weeks to get around Cape Horn, but the gales were too strong, so the captaiin decided to sail into the Pacific via the Cape of Good Hope. At one point during the voyage, the crew sighted a bright comet. Whaling grounds include the San Antonio and Coast of Brazil grounds. Second voyage partially documents the Lucretia (Steam bark) of San Francisco, mastered by Edward Kelley and then Robert P. Gifford, from 19 December 1882 - 12 November 1883 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans in addition to the Chukchi Sea. Includes descriptions of whales and walruses seen or taken, deaths at sea, mutinous behavior, interactions with indigenous peoples, punishments, illnesses, a rescue, and encountering a shipwreck. Also contains whale stamps and a crew list. On 24 March 1883, Captain Kelley shot and killed John Madden, the ringleader of a mutiny. The logbook contains five pages devoted to the particulars of this mutiny, and authorities later fully exonerated the captain. Captain Kelley left the vessel at Unalaska on 30 April 1883 but later returned. At one point during the voyage, the vessel rescued someshipwreck survivors. Whaling grounds include the Arctic Ocean grounds. Third voyage documents the Lucretia (Steam bark) of San Francisco, mastered by James S. Carter, from 11 December 1883 - 3 November 1884 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans in addition to the Chukchi Sea. Includes descriptions of whales and walruses seen or taken, a death at dea, interactions with indigenous peoples, punishments, and a rescue. Mr. Randall died at sea on April 9, 1884. On 14 April 1883, the vessel took on the crew of the bark Mablel who deserted after she was caught in the ice. The bark Mabel was later saved. Whaling grounds include the Arctic Ocean grounds. Fourth voyage partially documents the Lucretia (Steam bark) of San Francisco, mastered by James S. Carter, from 27 November 1884 - 6 November 1885 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Includes descriptions of whales and walruses seen or taken, accidents, a death at sea, punishments, and encountering a shipwreck. Also contains accounts of provisions, and inventories of oil. On 14 April 1885, the crew picked up a whaleboat and crew from the bark Rainbow, which was wrecked in the ice. The crew picked up wood from the wreck of the bark Mabel on August 12, 1885.
